From a small beginning as a recreational facility for journalists in Mumbai, today the Press Club, which was established in 1978, has grown to a membership of over 1,200 journalists who represent the mainline print and electronic media in the city.
In recent years, the Press Club has expanded its agenda to provide professional services to journalists. It is the only Press Club in India to boast of a full-fledged Media Centre providing computer workstations, Internet facilities and other professional aids to visiting journalists, free-lancers and photographers. The Mumbai Press Club is again the only professional club in the country running an e-mail network. Not the least, the Press Club hosts the best run and most popular Film Circle in the city.
Culture Beat, which organises both literary activities and entertainment programmes and our monthly food festivals are now becoming popular with members and guests. Recently, we have also added an Art Gallery as another easily available and inexpensive facility for artists who find it difficult to exhibit their paintings/ sculptures in Mumbai.
Over the years the Press Club has also emerged as a center for decision-makers to announce and discuss their latest contribution to society, policy and the economy. The state-of-the-art conference hall at the club hosts politicians of all hues for a grilling session on their omissions and commissions, while business leaders are oft visitors for informal sessions with media persons. Environmentalists, health experts and yoga teachers and even magicians have all had a field day at the Press Club! The Press Club runs an efficient and regular communication network of journalists in Mumbai and the rest of the country directly and through their newspaper/media offices.
As a Press Club associate, you too will be part of the network and will be able to expand your reach. The city needs to strengthen independent media platforms like the Press Club of Mumbai. We are sure all the journalist, PR associates and corporates will join the effort.
